Hi 'FDCMAN',

Why do you think so ? Even converted to US$ 146 is a lot for this Cover.!?

I believe the defunct PO adds additional value. I have seen this phenomenon in FDC collecting.
What do you think?

Hi 'FDCman'

This is really a pricky-pear - which ever way you want to approach it !!

It is a unique item.

An envelope with four 5c emergence self adhesive stamp issue to top up the rate from 40c to 45c - correct postage rate.

Beautifully cancelled by a Postshop which has since closed.

At NZ9 I would easily sell it (catalogue in 2005 at NZ$2 per stamp on cover I have sold for NZ$12.

The price can always be debateable.

To some NZ$90 would be too little, others too much -as would NZ$490 or more be.

The only way to gauge a price another is prepared to pay for it, is to put is up for auction with a high reserve and see how high others are willing to pay for it.

What do you think about the latter ?

I agree 100% , particularly with the last sentence. I enjoy looking at historical patterns as it pertains to prices realized in auction catalogs. ,but it is all the more difficult with esoteric items. Its all a function of demand, with occasional flukes of nature where if someone really wants it, then price becomes less relevant. :D

Erich:
The APS ( American Philatelic Society) presently has 44,112 members. We have members from 109 countries.
Please feel free to join.

The publication is excellent and so are the benefits.

Hi Brian,

Thank you for the Info and offer.

I was a member for many years in the 80s & 90s but with my move to NZ I gave it up.

Then the high Membership was 55 000, another sign that there is not enough influx even all new efforts like the APS auction site.

I always found the APS magazine interesting mainly because of the varied advanced collectors articles.

Regards
Erich

You are very welcome Erich:
On the same topic. , Does New Zealand or Australia have a national numismatic society?
Sometime ago I wanted to join the Royal Philatelic Society in London, but could not understand their desire for two references. I guess I could provide several fellow philatelists and dealers I have dealt with, but I still could not understand the logic behind it.

Brian.

Hi Brian,

The APS or ATA etc. also asks for Society memberships you belong to.

Sometimes it best not to try to understand another's logic, it only serves to understand not having reached that level of wisdom !

Hi,
Yes I think that $190.00 is to much for a modern times item, a lot of this is pushed up by stamp dealers and not really worth what they want, much like real estate, however an item is only ever worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. I have just purchased some similar items for nowhere like this price, so check or shop around, check auction sites and you will or maybe surprised. :D

Hi Steven,

Glad I finally discovered your reply.
I follow and do understand your line of thinking which I respect.

Globally the postal system has dramatically changed the last 5 years and even before, presently the metamorphosis continues in 1st World Countries to better and faster. In Third World Countries the latter is slowed because of lacking modern infrastructure which in a way is good for postmark collector.
Today here in NZ we get inkjet cancels, labels for plastic envelopes and old type round PO cancels at very few outlets but that you know as well.

Older collectors have a better understanding of what to collect though it can not be gospel and some collect for only their own enjoyment. Most use their collecting skills to advance their knowledge and in this process needs literature to obtain yhe better item. The chase of the Hunt and an item unique makes one proud, often with a search/found history attached.

People do collect postal history which is beyond the mere stamp. This cover serves to educate and the new owner will be equiped with the merits of the cover, price would be ultimately superfluous compared with some modern mint special edition items.
